NOTICE

With decree of the Directorate-General for Archives reg. 558/2021 of 8 September 2021 the Examining Board for the final exams of the 2019-2021 course of the School of Palaeography, Archive Studies and Diplomatics annexed to the State Archive of Milan was appointed. This Board is composed as follows:

Dr CARMELA SANTORO – chairman (appointed by Dr Benedetto Luigi Compagnoni, Director of the State Archive of Milan and Director of the School of Palaeography, Archive Studies and Diplomatics of the State Archive of Milan);
Prof. EZIO BARBIERI – Diplomatics teacher at the School of Palaeography, Archive Studies and Diplomatics of the State Archive of Milan;
Dr MARZIA DINA PONTONE – director of the University Library of Pavia, external member;
Prof. SIMONA GAVINELLI – associate professor of Palaeography and Diplomatics at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, lecturer in Latin Palaeography at the Milan and Brescia site, external member;
Dr LUCIA RONCHETTI – State archivist at the Lombardy Archivistic and Bibliographical Office, ministerial representative;
Dr ANTONELLA CESARINI – State archivist at the State Archive of Milan, secretary.

The origins of the School of Palaeography, Archive Studies and Diplomatics of the State Archive of Milan, officially founded after Unification with ruling no. 2552 of 27 May 1875, can be traced to the teaching of Diplomatics from 1770 onwards at the Palatine School of Brera and the subsequent teaching of Diplomatics at the Diplomatic Archive of Milan by Dr Giuseppe Cossa (1842).

The School is one of 17 Schools of Palaeography, Archive Studies and Diplomatics currently active in Italy (Bari, Bologna, Bolzano, Cagliari, Florence, Genoa, Mantua, Milan, Modena, Naples, Palermo, Parma, Perugia, Rome, Turin, Trieste, Venice) that award the Diploma of Palaeography, Archive Studies and Diplomatics.

Value of PAD School diploma

In the absence of more precise indications, it is possible to refer to ruling no. 07846/2013 of the Regional Administrative Court of Lazio (Section Seconda Quater), filed on 6/8/2013.
This ruling states that the PAD diploma has never been qualified as a post-graduate specialisation and in curricular terms can therefore be considered independent from degree diplomas. Accessed with a high school leaver’s certificate, the archiving schools at the State Archives qualify as university level schools taking into account their structure and their procedures for admissions and the organisation of the courses, two years in length with final exam. As a result, the relative diplomas cannot be considered the equivalent of postgraduate qualifications.

2019-2021 Course

The School is directed by Benedetto Luigi Compagnoni, Director of the State Archive of Milan, and coordinated by Carmela Santoro.
It teaches General Archivistics, Special Archivistics, Digital Archiving, Cultural heritage legislation, Palaeography, Diplomatics, Diplomatics of the contemporary document.
Lessons are held by archivists of the State Archive of Milan and other institutions, university lecturers and other academics (PAD School teachers).
The course lasts two years and attendance is mandatory. Lessons are held from November to May every year, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
It is possible to attend the course as an audit student. In this case it isn’t necessary to pass the entrance exam and attendance at lessons is not mandatory. Audit students cannot take the final exam or receive the diploma.
As well as classroom lessons, the two-year course will include practical exercises, periodic tests and visits to archive institutes.
The study plan also includes an internship at the State Archive of Milan, to be performed outside of lesson times.
The final exam at the end of the two-year course, which can be sat by those who have attended at least 83% of lessons, consists of two written tests - Palaeography-Diplomatics and Archivistics - and an oral exam on the topics covered in the course and the activities carried out during the internship.
For the 2019 - 2021 course two Palaeography and Diplomatics scholarships and two Archivistics scholarships will be awarded to the four students that pass the final exam with the highest mark.

Admissions to the School

To be admitted to the School, applicants must have a upper high school leaver’s certificate and pass an entrance exam.

Applications for the first year of the 2021-2023 course will open on 1 September 2021 and close on 30 September. Applicants should send a scan of the entrance exam application form complete with €16 tax stamp, in PDF format, exclusively via email to as-mi@beniculturali.it, attaching a copy of an identity document.
The exam will be held on 12 October 2021 and applicants will have to show a valid COVID-19 GREEN PASS at the entrance to the institution before entering.

The exam will consist of two tests:

1. translation into Italian of a medieval Latin text, (candidates are allowed to use a Latin dictionary during the Latin test). The text for admission to the current two-year course (Latin test 2019-2021, PDF, 180 KB) is included here by way of an example;

2. institutional history test with 30 open-ended questions. The test covers the following topics:
• States, governments and territories of the 20th century. Medieval Lombardy. The era of the signorie and the principalities. Lombardy of the regional States in the European context. Lombardy and the birth of the modern state. Lombardy in the unified State.
• Historic institutions of the Kingdom of Italy and the Italian Republic.
• Ecclesiastical polity.
See the detailed programme and the reference bibliography (programme - PDF, 299 KB). The text for admission to the current two-year course (History test 2019-2021, PDF, 110 KB) is included here by way of an example.

Entrance exams must be passed with a minimum mark of 18/30 in each test.

A maximum of 30 students will be admitted. If more than 30 students pass the entrance exam, a ranking will be drawn up based on the marks from the two tests and the top 30 candidates will be admitted.

Admission to the second year (paragraph being updated)

Students that regularly attended the first year will have to register for the second year in September 2020, emailing the dedicated “2nd year registration form” (Form) complete with €16 tax stamp to the School Secretary’s Office at as-mi@beniculturali.it. The original form must be handed in during the first in-person lesson. Access to the second year for students admitted conditionally is subject to their passing of the entrance exam (Latin translation and institutional history test), considered unsatisfactory first time around. Students admitted conditionally must register to resit the exam in September 2020, emailing the dedicated “Exam resit registration form” (Form) complete with €16 tax stamp to the School Secretary’s Office at as-mi@beniculturali.it. The original form must be handed in on the day of the resit.Audit students (already registered last year) can register for the second year in September 2020, emailing the dedicated “2nd year registration form_audit student” (Form) complete with tax stamp to the School Secretary’s Office at as-mi@beniculturali.it. The original form must be handed in during the first in-person lesson. Audit students cannot take the final exam to receive the Diploma.

The direct admission to the second year of students who have taken a General Archivistics, Palaeography or Diplomatics university exam, or an exam that includes Palaeography and Diplomatics, is nonetheless subject to an assessment of the programme and the bibliography of the exams taken and the passing of the entrance exams (Latin translation and institutional history test) and conditional on the maximum number of students (50) not having already been reached. Also in this case, students may register for the second year entrance exam in September 2020, emailing the dedicated “Registration form for direct admission to the 2nd year” (Form) complete with €16 tax stamp to the School Secretary’s Office at as-mi@beniculturali.it, attaching a list of the exams they have taken. The original form must be handed in on the day of the entrance exam.

For checks on the programmes and bibliography please contact the School coordinator (carmela.santoro@cultura.gov.it).

The second year entrance exam, both for first year students taking resits and candidates for direct admission to the second year, will take place in October 2020, adopting the necessary safety measures according to the evolution of the current health emergency.

Second year of 2019-2021 course (paragraph being updated)

Due to the COVID 19 emergency, in-person lessons were suspended from March to May 2020 but the School’s activities continued via the dedicated e-learning platform. Although Royal Decree no. 1163 of 2 October 1911 and subsequent circulars establish that admission to the second year is subject to mandatory attendance, Prime Ministerial Decree of 4 March 2020 and subsequent measures suspended in-person activities and guaranteed the full validity of the academic year with classroom lessons replaced by online lessons and ad hoc educational materials.
As such, the admission to the second year of regularly registered students that attended the classroom lessons until their suspension and participated in the remote educational activities may take place as usual in September 2020.
To evaluate the level of understanding of the topics covered during the first year, particularly during the suspension of in-person activities, and the level of understanding of students admitted directly to the second year, at the start of the second year the teachers of the various subjects will hold tests on the first-year programme in order to be able to plan additional or revision classes if necessary.
These assessment tests on acquired knowledge will be tailored on the basis of the programme, the bibliography and the educational materials made available to students by individual teachers and will not go towards the final exam.

Admission to final exams
To register for the final exams at the end of the two-year course, students that have regularly attended lessons must send a scan of the registration form complete with €16 tax stamp, exclusively via email to as-mi@beniculturali.it by 31 July 2021. During the exams students will have to provide the secretary’s office with another €16 tax stamp which will be applied to the diploma.

Final exams

In observance of the ministerial indications for the final exams of the PAD Schools, the written exams will be based exclusively on the disciplines of archivistics and diplomatics (teachers Piroli, Santoro - Barbieri) and will last one hour each on 14 September. Students will need to show a valid COVID-19 GREEN PASS at the entrance to the institution before entering.

The oral exams will take place from 17 September. Further details will be communicated in due course. If the Covid emergency ends, the written exams will take place on 14 and 15 September.

If necessary, an additional exam will be held for the digital archiving and diplomatics of the digital document disciplines to establish the final oral grade. The exam will consist of a total of two open-ended questions, one per discipline, and will take place online on 6 September at 11 a.m., lasting 40 minutes.
