The origins of the School of Palaeography, Archive Studies and Diplomatics of the State Archive of Milan, officially founded after Unification with ruling no. 2552 of 27 May 1875, can be traced to the teaching of Diplomatics from 1770 onwards at the Palatine School of Brera and the subsequent teaching of Diplomatics at the Diplomatic Archive of Milan by Dr Giuseppe Cossa (1842).
The School is one of 17 Schools of Palaeography, Archive Studies and Diplomatics currently active in Italy (Bari, Bologna, Bolzano, Cagliari, Florence, Genoa, Mantua, Milan, Modena, Naples, Palermo, Parma, Perugia, Rome, Turin, Trieste, Venice) that award the Diploma of Palaeography, Archive Studies and Diplomatics
Ministerial Decree 241/2021 introduced two-year specialization courses for archivists, leading to a specialization diploma for archivists. Auditing is not permitted.
