November 2021 - International conference “The archives during uprisings and wars”. From the Napoleonic period to the era of cyber war
Wars and uprisings have always threatened the survival of the archives, but the Napoleonic era introduced important new developments, also in this field, which have survived through to the present day. For the entirety of the ancien régime, the archives were the subject of wilful destruction or viewed as spoils of war particularly for practical reasons, acquired so the information contained in them could be used to govern the newly-captured lands or, conversely, to keep the same information from the enemy. From the start of the 19th century through to today, other reasons have also put the archives at risk, either directly or indirectly. Therefore, from this period onwards, the historical but also the symbolic value of the archives turned them into political tools used to validate or discredit the legitimacy of wars and revolts fought in the name of a national identity or for ideological reasons.
Through eight thematic sections, the international conference aims to reconstruct the consequences of the wars on the Italian and foreign archives, examining losses, divisions, reconstructions and claims to archives at the end of the conflicts, the evolution of international law, the role of the archives at political level and in the protection of rights, and the archives during contemporary wars.
Organised by the State Archive of Milan, the conference will be streamed live from 3 to 6 November 2021 on:
