Dante in the Archive - Fifteen steps into Inferno
The State Archive of Milan, the University of Milan, university research group ‘Coordinate dantesche’ and ‘Archeion. Amici dell’Archivio di Stato di Milano’ present Dante in the Archive. Fifteen steps into Inferno, a series of fifteen meetings, each one dedicated to a segment of two or three cantos from the first part of the Divine Comedy (Calendar PDF 4104 KB).
Each of the readings – held by a renowned medievalist from the University of Milan and other Italian and international universities (Freiburg, Bari, Parma, Bergamo) – will examine key aspects, sometimes little known to the general public, of the cantos, exploring their role and significance in Dante’s literature and in medieval culture.
At the same time, thanks to the important heritage of the State Archive, participants will have the chance to get acquainted with precious and rare medieval documents, which will be connected and compared with the world that Dante portrays in the Divine Comedy.
The series of meetings will begin on the evening of 16 December 2022, running for all of 2023, and will be held at the State Archive (venue for the opening meeting) and two sites of the University of Milan (via Festa del Perdono 7 and via S. Alessandro 1).
Refreshments will be served afterwards in the elegant frescoed room on the mezzanine floor, where visitors will be able to admire the remains of the 17th century decorations.
Tickets for Dante in the Archive are free of charge subject to availability.
